Chapter Seventeen

“Is it just me, or was that a lot scarier than the last time we were in there?” Zara asks once we’re back in the car and away from the warehouse. The other units stayed close until we were sure Toscani wasn’t going to try and send anyone after us just for fun.

“It seems like little Santino is growing into his big boy pants,” I say. I was impressed with him this time; he held his own. Something I wasn’t expecting. Part of the reason I had no qualms about going in there to ask about Tony Moreno was because in our past meetings, Toscani was less ferocious. But it seems like he’s been tempered over the past few months. I’m not sure what to make of that, other than if we ever have to tussle with him again, there’s a good chance blood will be drawn.

“So now what?” Zara asks. “If Toscani doesn’t know about the operation—”

“—we go after the source,” I say. “We’ll check Moreno’s home first, then any other places he’s known to frequent. If nothing else, we know his schedule. If he’s making a run for Toscani first thing in the morning, then he’ll be close.”

“You really think he’ll still drive the route? If he’s got Avery?”

“I think he’ll have delivered her by the time he’s scheduled to go out on his next route, which doesn’t give us a lot of time.” I check my phone again out of nervous habit. “The assassin said we had a day. That might not have meant a full twenty-four hours.”

“I’ve got his address as 6026 Highland Ave,” Zara says. “Apartment B.”

“Apartment?” If he’s keeping Avery there, it would be almost impossible for someone not to notice. Unless she’s been unconscious the whole time. Even then, there’s a much higher risk of someone seeing him transport her in and out of the apartment.

“Are you still sure this is our guy?” Zara asks again. I’m sure she’s having the same doubts about the situation. “I think we should check on the ex-military guy.”

“Call DuBois. Tell him to check on Grant,” I say. “Because you’re right, maybe I am barking up the wrong tree, but I don’t think so. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to be sure. We might as well use all these extra resources Janice allocated, right?”

“Got it,” Zara says, calling it in. With DuBois’ help we’ll be able to hit both locations at the same time. Still, the apartment aspect is bothersome. I assumed Moreno would have a freestanding building somewhere. A private place where he could hold Avery without the risk of being caught.

But as I’m puzzling it over in my mind, my phone buzzes again. I immediately recall it rang while I was in with Toscani, and I forgot to check on who called. “Slate,” I say, turning a bit so that Zara and I can hold conversations at the same time.

“Slate, it’s Caruthers,” the man on the other side says. “Just finished with the inspection of the Huxley house.
